Chapter Eight

Lucas followed Troy out of the bedroom, pulling his pants up as he scrambled to keep up. He knew his words made it seem as though he wanted to argue, but he only wanted to end the conversation. He wanted to remain in bed with Troy, spending what time they had together enjoying each other, not arguing.

“You really are unbelievable. You…you are a fucking coward.” Troy spat out, pacing back and forth in his living room.

“Can you please just… let's sit on the couch and discuss this, Troy.” Lucas raised his hands to show Troy he didn’t want to fight.

“It’s the twenty-first century. There are gay billionaires all across this country, across this world. You aren’t scared of sacrificing your company, you're scared of what people might think of YOU.”

“Okay, yes. You’re right. I’m scared. But weren’t you when you came out? And losing my company is a very real possibility.” Lucas tried reasoning with Troy, wishing they could return to the bed where they were smiling and happy.

“Of course I was scared, but I wasn’t going to pretend to be someone I wasn’t.” Troy spat back at Lucas, hating that he even considered still sleeping with women.

“I don’t want people to know. Pretending still to see women is the only way I can make sure they don’t find out. It’s not like I’ll be sleeping with them now that I know what I know about myself.”

“And me? What happens to me?” Troy stopped pacing and glared at Lucas, wondering if he had any idea.

“You and me can continue seeing each other. Weekends in my office. I could come visit you here. Being your boss gives us a lot of excuses to spend time together. It would work out perfectly,” Lucas shrugged.

“So, I stay your dirty little secret while you take women you can’t even get it up for out in public?” Troy crossed his arms over his chest and tried to word it in such a way that Lucas would realize how idiotic he sounded.

“You are more to me than just a dirty little secret. You are the first person I’ve ever truly wanted, I’ve ever felt I needed.” Lucas stepped toward Troy, finally realizing he had fallen in love with the man.

“Not needed enough to stop pretending you’re a straight, billionaire playboy. Not enough to admit to anyone that you care for me.” Troy didn’t understand why they were continuing to have their conversation. Lucas wasn’t making any reasonable statements.

“I need you, we both know that. Why does anyone else need to know?” Lucas sighed, still trying to step closer toward Troy.

“They don’t need to know, but is it too much to ask that you just pretend to be single until you’re ready to come out, and not flaunt women around, treating them like they mean more to you than I do?” Troy shook his head and sighed, hating that he couldn’t make Lucas understand what he wanted.

“I just can’t risk that. I can’t just suddenly be single, no longer going out with the women I could seduce with a single smile.
